Women in HPC at ISC 2018

Women in HPC will once again be participating in the diversity discussions at the ISC High Performance Conference (24th-28th June 2018, Frankfurt, Germany).

By bringing together women from across the international HPC community, as well as the leaders, managers and hirers who can bring about change and provide allies and advocacy for the work of women WHPC showcases the talent of these women, provides opportunities to network and inspires the current and next generation of women HPC professionals while working with the community to bring about cultural change to improve the under-representation of women in supercomputing.

To take part in our activities at ISC please make sure that you register for the relevant event. Each event requires a different type of registration.

BoF: Retaining the Advantage of a diverse HPC Workforce: How to deal with Microaggression

Wednesday 27 June 2018, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
Pikkolo, Frankfurt Messe Conference Centre
FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY

Most of us recognise that diverse teams foster increased productivity and output. However, in recent years it’s become increasingly clear that recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce is the single biggest challenge. What can we, each of us, do to improve diversity and build a more inclusive environment? Although, microaggression is not something people tend to talk about, it is a real issue that many of us have to face on a daily basis. But what is it? Have you ever heard of, or experienced microaggression?

Following a successful series of BoFs from Women in HPC (WHPC), this year we are joined by individuals not directly affiliated with WHPC, to focus on a topic that can affect any of us and contributes to workforce inequality. This BoF will discuss the real effects of microaggression on workplace culture and the danger it poses to recruiting and maintaining a diverse workforce, as well as its impact on the welfare and associated loyalty of employees. We will discuss microaggression across the spectrum of differences both those outwardly visible and those that are not.

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY

The eighth international Women in HPC workshop will be held at ISC18, Frankfurt, Germany. This workshop provides leaders and managers in the HPC community with methods to improve diversity and also to provide early career women with an opportunity to develop their professional skills and profile. Following the overwhelming success of the 2017 WHPC workshops we will once again discuss methods and steps that can be taken to address the under-representation of women, in particular by discussing the following topics:

  • How to build workplace resilience and maintain well-being, while managing work stress.
  • Being part of the solution: instructions for advocates and allies.
  • Best practices from organizations on improving workplace diversity.
  • Managing the two body problem and achieving effective work-life balance.

We will also provide opportunities aimed at promoting and providing women with the skills to thrive in HPC including:

  • Short talks by women working in HPC
  • Pointers on how to handle workplace conflicts and effectively respond to discrimination
  • Short talks on: best practices from equity frameworks from outside HPC, suggestions and challenges for women in HPC related venture capitals, effectively dealing with workplace discrimination, building a successful career, excelling in the workforce, etc.
