Salary:

Band D: £31,931 to £34,709 per annum (plus an additional role based allowance of up to £3,000)

Band E: £39,748 to £44,166 per annum (plus an additional role based allowance of up to £4,000)

Location: Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire

Contract: Permanent, Full time or Part time hours considered

This is an incredible opportunity for you to work on software that will be used in space! This exciting role allows you to use your software skills to work alongside our scientists to come up with innovative ways of using software. You will be part of the design team for specific pieces of space instrumentation.

This post is based at RAL within the Production & Software Group of the Imaging Systems Division within RAL Space.  The Imaging Systems Division has a long standing heritage of excellence in Space flight going back over 50 years.  We build electronic systems for spaceflight and hence quality is paramount in our work.

RAL Space (part of STFC) carries out world-class space research and technology development with involvement in over 210 space missions over its 50+ year history. ​We undertake world-leading space research and technology development, provide space test and ground-based facilities, design and build instruments, analyse and process data and operate S- and X-band ground-station facilities, as well as lead conceptual studies for future missions.

About the role:

This role supports the work of the Electronics group in RAL Space. You will also support internal and external audits. In addition to the embedded work the software group supports the hardware engineers by providing electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) software.  This is coded in LabVIEW, IDL, Python, C++ or C and runs either on Windows or Linux operating systems. About you:

You will have experience of specifying and designing software for embedded systems. Most of the instruments developed by RAL Space have been programmed using ANSI C and sometimes assembler. You will need to be flexible in your attitude and have a good engineering understanding. You must be able to work unsupervised and meet schedules through self-organization.
