Scientist I – Research Computing Consultant

Scientist I

UAB Research Computing is searching for a Scientist I to employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in the field of research computing. This position will require you to work closely with colleagues in the IT Research Computing group as well as with faculty, student/postdoctoral researchers, and technical staff across the campus to enable and accelerate their research computing efforts.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with domain scientists at UAB to identify computational needs and provide guidance on using appropriate research computing platform.
  • Develop working collaborations with various academic and research units at UAB and support domain experts in using UABs HPC and OpenStack platforms to enhance their research.
  • Handle customer support and service requests, adhering to established SLA’s and policies.
  • Assist researchers in designing and optimizing applications workflow and pipelines.
  • Serve as a co-PI/Senior Personnel on research proposals and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Preferred qualifications include a Master’s or PhD in a scientific discipline, computer science, engineering or related field. A combination of education and experience using or supporting HPC and/or cloud computing in the science and engineering disciplines is desired. Written and verbal communications skills interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team environment, project management skills, interactive/advanced data visualization, experimental design/statistics, and other data science skills are also preferred.

UAB IT Research Computing is a quickly growing group at the University of Alabama at Birmingham within the Information Technology department. The team provides comprehensive support for researchers that use Cheaha HPC and Ruffner OpenStack cloud environments and provides advanced software and consulting support needed by researchers.
