Senior Exascale Systems Engineer

The University of Cambridge Open Exascale Lab (COEL) is an exciting new initiative to explore and exploit the next generation of advanced technologies which will form the world’s fastest supercomputers. These state-of-the-art systems will allow us to understand the fundamental nature of the universe, design new materials, clean energy solutions, and to develop and deliver personalised medicine and data-driven healthcare.

The COEL is housed within Cambridge Research Computing Service a long standing and leading UK National Supercomputing Center, providing HPC services to world leading scientists, medics and engineers across the UK. We operate the UK’s most powerful academic supercomputer, the UK fastest academic AI system, the UK’s fastest data storage solution and the UK’s first production 10 petaflop GPU/X86 heterogenous system. This is all managed by a highly innovative OpenStack Research Computing Software Environment via a software defined / DevOps methodology evolved for the cloud native world we live in today.

The COEL has several exciting opportunities for exceptional candidates to join a growing team within the lab.

The Senior Exascale Systems Engineer will work on integrating, developing and optimising a variety of systems middleware, high performance filesystems, advanced networks and accelerators to take advantage of upcoming state-of-the-art high-performance computing and Big Data and AI technologies. The successful candidates will have:

A degree in a computational science (or have equivalent relevant experience) and experience in the use, management, and deployment of large scale HPC infrastructure
Practical and proven knowledge of Linux system administration, shell scripting and practical knowledge of high-level programming or scripting languages such as Python or Bash.
Configuration management and automation methods using technologies such as Ansible and Terraform. Experience with storage platforms, parallel file systems and cloud computing platforms such as OpenStack will be advantageous.
The role holders will need to be proactive, creative and comfortable resolving complex problems. We are looking for candidates that are excited about working with latest state of the art edge technologies, infrastructure as code in an agile driven environment.

Experience of working within a scientific environment/providing support to researchers would be an advantage.

Significant experience will be required for the senior roles in addition to supervisory and mentoring skills.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
