Secure Research Data Environment Engineer

Overview

The Secure Research Data Environment (SRDE) Engineer works collaboratively with the Global Office of Information Security (GOIS) and Global Infrastructure and Operations (GIO) teams to further the research and compliance mission of NYU. This position provides technical consultation to NYU departmental research groups and NYU IT teams to design and support on-premise and cloud-based secure research technology systems and services. The SRDE Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and managing robust, scalable, and highly-available secure environments with special focus on meeting requirements for restricted research (Controlled Unclassified Information, Personally Identifiable Information, Protected Health Information, and other potentially sensitive data), including the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, NIST SP 800-53, and NIST SP 800-171 requirements. This role provides day-to-day management, administration, and troubleshooting of applications, containers, including planning and managing capacity, security, building proof-of-concept environments, and testing, along with patching of infrastructure systems. The work of the SRDE Engineer involves data security, design of secure data analysis environments, user account management, application containerization and desktop virtualization, and data storage system administration. Remote work is an option for this position.

Responsibilities

 

Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (with a minimum of 5 years experience with secure data environments)

Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree in Computer Science or relevant field.

Required Experience:
3+ years of working in an information technology environment 5+ years of working experience with secure data environments

Preferred Experience:
3+ years working with secure data environments and sensitive data. Experience working in research environments, particularly in team-based academic settings or sensitive data settings. Experience working with Research cloud environments, research computing applications and infrastructure. Public cloud experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP. Experience with REDCap software and administration. Experience with data security standards, such as NIST and HIPAA.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
System health monitoring and system usage data transfer tools Data transfer tools, such as SFTP Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation and written and verbal communication skills, including documentation and customer support. Ability to establish positive working relationships with team members and patrons
