Senior Research Software Engineer

This role presents a great opportunity for 2 motivated professionals to join the growing community of Research Software Engineers (RSE) at Imperial College London via its core team within the Research Computing Service (RCS). The RCS encompasses a dedicated team of RSEs, an on-premises High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility and provides training for the HPC users and researchers.

Our mission at the RSE Team is to increase the quality, impact and sustainability of the research software developed at Imperial, supporting the College in improving its world-leading research outputs. The Team has been in place since 2017 and has worked on dozens of projects across all faculties of the College. We have experience developing and maintaining performant, reliable and sustainable research software in a variety of research domains, training researchers in best coding practices and supporting the writing of grant proposals with a software component. The Team is supported by the resources of the ICT division and works in collaboration with the academic research community.

As a senior RSE, you will actively participate in research by providing advice on the application of technologies and leading the delivering of software development projects. You will contribute by developing innovative software, mentoring less experienced developers, and promoting good software engineering that ultimately accelerates research. You will work under general direction with a clear framework of accountability, while exercising substantial personal responsibility and autonomy.

As RSE is a very diverse role, touching multiple technologies and expertise, the desirable requirements cover a wide range of professional tracks. However, there is no expectation that a single applicant will cover them all, but only to show their strengths in at least one, which should be highlighted during the application process.
