Would you like to help academic researchers to advance their groundbreaking research?  Do you have a background in systems administration running Linux? Do you want to help support the use of a world class high-performance computing system?  If so, then Princeton University is recruiting a systems administrator to join the Princeton Institute for Computational Science & Engineering (PICSciE) as well as its Research Computing Systems and Storage group.

PICSciE is an interdisciplinary institute with faculty and researchers from diverse backgrounds. It combines this broad expertise to address new and challenging computational problems and contribute to the body of scientific knowledge, and provides state-of-the-art computing and visualization facilities in collaboration with the Office of Information Technology’s Research Computing.

The role of this position is focused on supporting departmental research systems and high-performance clusters as well as help guide users on their choice of systems, software and programming issues plus work with a team of systems administrators running the most modern hardware available.

If you have a strong background in Linux, system administration, some programming experience, and have worked in an academic-like setting, you have the right skill set to make an immediate impact on research at Princeton.

Responsibilities:

Provide installation, maintenance and repair of server systems

Support users, helping them one-on-one or remotely through tickets

Interface between the desktop systems and the high-performance clusters

Integrate centralized configuration management

Maintain and write scripts to automate system administration functions

Manage small to medium sized disk storage systems

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with 2-5 years of experience or 5-10 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree

Experience in the installation, maintenance, operation, tuning, and troubleshooting of Linux and related systems and software

Experience with programming and scripting languages

Experience with system automation tools such as Puppet, Ansible, or Chef

Experience with versioning tools such as Git or Subversion

Ability to manage time effectively, working both independently and as part of a team

Enthusiasm for learning new skills and adapting to a dynamic environment

Strong interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for customer service, and the ability to work with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using and developing open source software tools

Experience with High Performance Computing cluster technologies

Experience with cloud platforms

Experience with programming in one or more compiled languages like C, C++, Fortran

Prior work experience in an academic or research environment
