Senior Research Scientist, Visualization

Overview: 

The Visualization Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated senior scientist to research and develop techniques for data analysis and scientific visualization on one of the most powerful computer system in the world. This position is part of the Data and AI Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSM).

The Data and AI Section researches and develops methods to manage and gain knowledge from scientific data in support of DOE and ORNL missions.

CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

We are a community of top researchers who are ready to tackle the hardest problems faced by the country and the world, such as the development of advanced materials, clean energy, national security, and supercomputing.  ORNL is an open science laboratory, where research staff are expected to participate in and demonstrate leadership in the international research community.

As a Senior Research Scientist, you will have the opportunity to help solve some of the most challenging problems this country faces. You will lead and perform groundbreaking research on a wide range of significant problems with the fastest computing platforms in the world. This position requires novel thinking, teamwork, and discovery in finding new approaches for analyzing massive and complex data, collaborating with worldwide experts, and publishing groundbreaking results.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project teams to design, develop, build, manage and maintain visualization and analysis software on high end computing systems. These activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceve and lead the development, testing and deployment of analysis and visualization algorithms
  • Analysis and evaluation of performance on high-end computing systems, especially the efficient use of accelerators such as GPUs.
  • Active collaboration with project affiliates in industry, academia, and government labs.
  • Author peer reviewed papers, technical reports and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.
  • Be a part of a vibrant collaborative research environment which will provide the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in high-performance computing, using ORNL’s Leadership Class Supercomputer.
  • Maintain membership in professional, academic, and research organizations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computer Science or a related field
  • 6+ years of relevant research beyond the Ph.D.
  • An established research record in analysis and visualization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modern software tools and high-performance computing
  • Experience developing tools for analysis and visualization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills
