The science of the 21st century demands computational capabilities far beyond what is generally available today. ORNL and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science (DOE-SC) intend to continue to lead the world in computational science and engineering as well as data analytics and artificial intelligence as tools for frontier scientific discovery, delivering new insights and significant breakthroughs with far-reaching impact for U.S. scientific leadership, industrial competitiveness, and national security. The Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is home to the intellectual and facility resources needed to accomplish these goals and is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Director of the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS). NCCS is ORNL’s outward facing high-performance computing enterprise anchored by DOE’s Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF). As such, it deploys and supports multiple leadership computing, storage, modeling, simulation, and data analytics programs for US government agencies including the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Airforce Weather (AFW), and the Department of Defense (DOD) among others. The NCCS Director reports to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Computing and Computational Sciences.
This high-profile position is responsible for maintaining a world-class infrastructure that enables world-class computational and data-intensive science, the continued deployment of leadership-class systems on scope, on schedule and on budget, and the delivery of high scientific efficiency through improved system software and enabling tools for science outcomes in biology, chemistry, climate, energy, fusion, materials, along with data analytics and AI initiatives in these and other scientific and technical areas of strategic importance to DOE-SC and other federal agencies. The successful candidate will set the vision and strategy and then organize, direct, and manage all functions of the division.

The major duties and responsibilities of the position are, but are not limited to, the following:
Lead strategic and business planning, business development, relationship management, budgeting and program execution for high-performance computing initiatives at ORNL, including work sponsored by the Department of Energy Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs, as well as interdisciplinary computational work sponsored by others through Strategic Partnership Programs, User Agreements and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements.
Execute long-range plans for current and proposed programs in the division by providing aggressive leadership for the organization, in both a managerial and technical capacity.
Provide scientific leadership through the management and execution of National User Facility Programs with the goal of ensuring excellence in scientific outcomes.
Manage resources and operations of a high-performance computational research facility by identifying opportunities to improve capabilities with respect to continued procurements to maintain leadership. Ensure a stimulating environment for creativity and scientific and technical excellence that will attract and retain outstanding research and operations staff.
Team with the ALD and other division directors in strategic planning, top-level program development and execution.
Foster clear scientific, technical, and budget communications within and outside the National Center for Computational Sciences.
Highlight technical achievements and staff recognition, identifying opportunities, and addressing issues of importance for the organization.
Mentor staff for professional success.
Promote a culture of safety and equality in the workplace.
Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of institutional values and ethics.
Organize, direct, and manage all division functions in accordance with DOE and ORNL policies, procedures and mandates.
Ph.D. in an area of computational science, applied mathematics, or computer science.
An international record of research/technical achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, and/or funded research grants.
A minimum of 15 years of professional experience beyond a Ph.D.
A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated management experience.
Demonstrated impactful record in a relevant area of computational science to include; modeling and simulation, engineering, data, or artificial intelligence.
Previous work experience with DOE sponsors, including the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs, Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program, and the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) highly desired.
The proven ability to plan, organize, and manage the budget and activities of a large organization.
A demonstrated record of supporting the professional development of research and technical staff.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance is preferred.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
