Computer Systems Engineer (EPICS/Blue Sky) – 100165

Division: AL-Advanced Light Source

 

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) Advanced Light Source (ALS, https://als.lbl.gov/) Division has an opening for a Computer Systems Engineer to join the team.

 

Working within the ALS Photon Science Development group (PSD), will develop control systems for experiments conducted at ALS end stations using EPICS and Bluesky. You will work closely with beamline staff, the beamline controls team, and the computing group. You will develop and document maintainable configurations, develop EPICS device drivers, and configure and develop Bluesky experiment plans.

 

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a premier user facility within the US Department of Energy complex, serving nearly 1,700 users per year, utilizing light across the electromagnetic spectrum, from infrared through hard x-rays. Its beamlines are used to study chemistry, biology, materials science, and the most pressing topics of worldwide concern, including pharmaceutical development, energy sciences, and geophysics. The ALS is preparing for a major upgrade to become a diffraction-limited light source with coherent power orders of magnitude higher than is available today.

 

What You Will Do:

• Design, build, test, and maintain acquisition framework for ALS instruments.

• Design and implement EPICS control systems components.

• Implement Bluesky framework for instruments.

• Develop and maintain EPICS drivers for detectors and controllers.

• Integrate beamline controls system with data management and analysis frameworks.

• Work closely with scientists to capture requirements.

• Document systems at various levels from code comments to design and architecture specifications.

• Create end-user documentation and tutorials.

• Give occasional presentations to ALS staff.

• Collaborate with other Scientific User Facilities.

• Contribute to one or more open-source software projects.

 

What is Required:

• Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.

• Knowledge and experience of control systems using one or more frameworks (e.g., EPICS, Tango, etc.)

• At least three years of experience with Python and C.

• Knowledge and experience with software project management techniques such as revision control, build tools, and issue tracking, continuous integration (CI) tools and methods.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to tackle complex challenges.

• Exceptional organizational skills and acute attention to detail.

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, engaging effectively with external collaborators and scientists.

• Experience in a Linux environment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with the Bluesky controls project.

• Experience with hardware motion controllers.

• Experience with analog and digital components.

• Experience with databases (SQL/NoSQL).

Notes:

• This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position has a targeted salary range of $8,883.00 – $11,103.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of $8,883.00 – $14,990.00/month. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
