Context And Mission

The NLP for Biomedical Information Analysis of the BSC-CNS (NLP4BIA-BSC) is funded through the Plan de Impulso de las Tecnologías del Lenguaje de la Agenda Digital by the Secretary of State of Telecommunications and the Information as well as several European Horizon projects and Spanish projects. It aims to promote the development of natural language processing and machine translation resources for Spanish and other co-official languages in biomedicine.

NLP4BIA-BSC is looking for a medical expert interested in Language Technologies and AI applications to provide domain expertise for generating semantic annotation resources and high-quality machine-learning datasets.

The candidate will be involved in medical domain-specific work related to international projects, being part of a highly multidisciplinary team of researchers working on topics related to deep learning approaches applied to named entity extraction (NER)/semantic annotation, entity linking and generation of advanced language models. The candidate will have the opportunity to provide domain expertise and input for developing cross-lingual medical NLP systems.

We search for a professional healthcare/medical expert with a deep understanding of the medical/clinical/health-related language and data, interest in medical terminologies and basic knowledge of AI technology to supervise and aid in the construction of corpora and text annotation resources for the current research projects in the NLP4BIA-BSC group within the Life Sciences Department.

Key Duties

Development, supervision and definition of biomedical and clinical text annotation and translation projects for the current research projects in the Life Sciences department.
Contribute to the documentation of materials, reports and deliverables describing the generated resources, results, and project descriptions of the NLP4BIA-BSC group.
Contribute to the dissemination activities of the results.
Managing medical linguistic annotation projects involving recruitment, coordination, and supervision of expert clinicians/nurses, clinical documentalists and terminologists.
Evaluation and testing of clinical text mining, natural language processing, language technology and machine translation tools.
Work on the preparation of project proposals.

Requirements

Education

  • At least a higher university degree in health-related disciplines, preferably Medicine, with training as a physician or Bachelor of Medicine and validation of medical degree by examination (Examen de Grado).

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in medicine in clinical settings.
  • Experience in using medical terminologies and controlled vocabularies.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of AI technologies.

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience

  • Familiar with software resources used for AI.
  • Language knowledge: Spanish and English (essential), Catalan (a plus).
  • Basic knowledge/understanding of other disciplines like pharmacology, biochemistry, and nursing would be a plus.
  • Interest in cognitive processes related to language processing, text mining, computational linguistics and new translation technologies (machine translation).
  • Familiar with clinical coding tasks (ICD10) would be a plus.
  • Familiar with patient-generated content and language would be a plus.
  • Experience as in healthcare or clinical documentalists tasks would be a plus.
  • Familiarity with medical literature databases (PubMed, Scielo, IBECS).
  • Familiarity with SNOMED CT, Spanish version of ICD10 and DeCS would be a plus.
  • Very basic programming skills (e.g. Python) would be a plus.
