Group Leader, Performance Engineering Group

Overview:

The Data and AI Systems Research Section within the Computer Science and Mathematics Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks a technical staff consultant to lead our Performance Engineering Group that designs and builds optimized data applications and systems with an emphasis on reliability, security, and scalability to enable accelerated discovery. Our Performance Engineering Group resides within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate and goes beyond traditional approaches to develop new methods for meeting user needs across multiple domains.

You will have the opportunity to provide technical leadership to software engineers, system engineers, system architects, and researchers in order to:

Architect and operate secure data collection systems to implement critical infrastructure federal regulatory programs.
Design cloud architectures and migrate on-premises systems to the cloud.
Process multi-modal data for classification and clustering at scale.
Implement sophisticated, automated processes using principles of data and software engineering.
Develop risk analysis algorithms, generate risk analysis data, and integrate data results into system processes.
You will facilitate communication and provide mentorship to cultivate an environment where every group member can reach their potential.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Thrive as a lead technical consultant providing domain expertise for project work within the group.
Analyze new and emerging technologies and tools for applicability to projects supported by the group.
Strike a balance between lending expertise and encouraging an inclusive environment where others’ ideas are considered and respected.
Work annually with team members to prepare a performance plan that will help each reach their full potential.
Promote collaboration at the group, section, division, directorate, and laboratory levels.
Participate in the annual performance evaluation process by rating team and taking part in the calibration process.
Create promotion packages for group members as warranted.
Be an advocate for members of the group with respect to special recognitions, supplemental performance awards (SPAs), and other awards.
Act as a co-chair of the annual ORNL Software and Data Expo.
Attend periodic directorate and division extended leadership meetings, management team meetings, and other meetings as warranted.
Attend periodic meetings with section head and all group leaders within the section.
Complete monthly 1-on-1 meetings with each group member.
Lead bi-weekly group meetings.

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or a related field and 15+ years of related technical experience.

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

5+ years of experience working with Oracle Database systems and tools.
5+ years of experience operating classified databases systems.
5+ years fielding Amazon Web Service applications.
Experience leading a software development team using a DevOps software development methodology.
Background in a classified, government environment.
Ability to effectively interact with program sponsors and stakeholders.
Ability to function as a member of a multi-location team.

Experience in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team.
