Junior Cloud HPC Engineer

Are you a newly qualified scientist or engineer with an interest in High Performance Computing (HPC) who wants an exciting placement working with a team of qualified, friendly, and supportive experts on a wide range of exciting projects across multiple domains (Energy/Aerospace/Motorsport/Science & Engineering)?  If you want to get your HPC career off to a flying start with a one year contract with a market leader in the HPC space, read on.

NAG is a long-standing, successful company that values teamwork, offers an opportunity for growing your skillset, flexible schedules and understands the need for work/life balance. Our team all work remotely from the comfort of our homes but remain very connected. We have a culture of innovation and collaboration and a people first philosophy.

NAG is at the frontiers of AI, Computer Science and Optimization and partner with all the main cloud providers; you’ll get lots of experience and support through working with different systems and we’ll support you to gain certification with at least one of the Cloud Service Providers.  You will also learn:

  • How to design, implement and configure HPC systems in the Cloud.
  • How to collate requirements and select system components.
  • How to design for performance and use tools to monitor state and diagnose issues.
  • How to create and manage Infrastructure-as-Code.
  •  The commercial aspects of HPC and operations in science and industry.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and an innovative thinker who can go beyond traditional methods. Additionally, they should possess good communication skills, with an ability and confidence to talk about technical topics. This role requires flexibility, agility and versatility to work on several projects, and an ability to manage and prioritize tasks without supervision. You will also need to be able to work with (and rapidly learn) unfamiliar tools and technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and manage Cloud HPC and AI infrastructure, including developing customized solutions.
  • Application installation, configuration and integration into HPC systems and workflows.
  • Maintaining Infrastructure-as-Code and associated pipelines.
  • Create and maintain proof-of-concept and test lab environments, to evaluate new technology and systems.
  • Benchmarking the performance of applications and systems, diagnosing and troubleshooting issues.
  • Design, implementation and testing of NAG HPC and AI tools.
  • Help develop new, innovative IP for Cloud HPC and AI.

About You / the desired candidate will have:

  • An MSc (or equivalent) in a science/engineering/numerical subject.
  • Experience of HPC, either in building, administering, or using HPC systems at some level.
  • Fundamental knowledge of computer architecture design and the impact of hardware choice and programming techniques on performance.
  • Experience in a common scripting language, preferably Python.
  • A minimum level of experience with software engineering tools and techniques, such as using a version control system.

Culture and Benefits:

We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including a competitive salary (dependent on your experience), a company-matched pension plan, and health/life/income protection insurance coverage. Additionally, we offer 30 paid days of annual leave (plus bank holidays), with the opportunity to buy or sell 5 days each year.

NAG is an equal opportunity employer, has a dedicated Women in Tech Team and are also a founding chapter of WHPC. We strongly believe that a diverse workforce contributes to our ability to develop innovative products and services. To promote inclusivity and diversity, we employ a blind recruitment process, redacting all information that could introduce conscious or unconscious bias during the shortlisting process.
