Administrative unit: Research Area Scientific Computing
Extent of employment: 40 hours per week
Your tasks:
- Design, maintain, optimise and troubleshoot hybrid HPC systems, for example HPC clusters, cloud solutions, quantum computers or storage systems, ensuring high availability and performance
- Implementation, evaluation and management of HPC software stacks (e.g. scheduler (Slurm/SGE), user evaluations, software optimisation on hardware)
- Creating documentation and supporting researchers in project planning, development and testing; promoting best practice in scientific computing, programming and efficient utilisation of HPC resources
- Anticipating new HPC trends, tools and architectures for our hybrid cloud stack and recommending improvements or adaptations to the technology that meet the requirements of both academic teaching and research, and industry
Your profile:
- Completed, subject-relevant diploma or master’s degree or equivalent qualification (e.g. specialised A-Level-Diploma with specialist knowledge or relevant professional experience)
- Good programming and scripting skills (minimum: Python, a performance-oriented, compiled programming language, and Unix/Linux incl. Bash)
- Several years’ experience in supporting HPC and/or cloud solutions (OpenStack, Kubernetes, etc.) would be an advantage
- Experience in providing user support for technical systems is advantageous
- Experience in the procurement and planning of server room infrastructure is advantageous
- Experience in planning and operating storage solutions is advantageous
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Independent and structured working style, coupled with a high level of willingness to learn
- Willingness to familiarise yourself with new tasks and technologies
- High level of reliability
- Customer- and service-oriented
- Very good knowledge of German and English

For this position in job group IVa, a minimum gross salary of € 3.450 per month (14 times) as of 2026 is stipulated in the collective agreement. Your actual starting salary will depend on your previous experience and will increase over the course of your employment.
