Senior Research Infrastructure Engineer

The role
Do you want to grow your computational skills and help support a thriving research community? The University of Bristol’s Advanced Computing Research Centre is searching for Research Infrastructure Engineers (RIEs) to join our growing team and help us to support our active community.

What will you be doing?
As an RIE, you’ll be involved in sustaining the new digital laboratory, as well as contributing to GW4’s next generation National Tier-2 supercomputer, Isambard 3. You will work with a talented team of engineers to combine traditional high performance computing tools with emerging cloud and DevOps technologies.  The result will be a highly flexible and performant community-orientated supercomputer with innovative and secure data environments. We will be drawing together a diverse set of technologies, such as batch schedulers, parallel filesystems, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Terraform, Ansible, Ceph, Keycloak, and more to create these innovative digital environments which will help our research community thrive.

You will support the robust operation of all systems and services within our ACRC portfolio. You will be responsible for providing technical support to our users, diagnosing and resolving issues, installing scientific and research software, and maintaining our core infrastructure, including compute, storage, networking, and data centres.

This year we will build the next generation of a national ARM-based supercomputer, Isambard.  As an RIE, you be involved with delivering this high-impact project. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and to enhance the user experience.

We are searching for curious, innovative and motivated engineers who are passionate about building great technologies and excellent working relationships. As part of our team, we will support you in developing the skills and experiences you need to succeed.

Join a highly experienced team who have an enviable track record of developing and delivering research infrastructure. We need motivated infrastructure engineers to work collaboratively within the team on our ambitious projects.

Together, we will create an innovative and powerful set of resources for our active user community within the University of Bristol and across the wider UK HPC community.

Join us and be part of this exciting new journey.

You should apply if
You are passionate about developing great technologies and yourself. You are methodical and will be looking out for automation opportunities and repeatable processes. You have an eye for detail and an empirical approach to problem solving and improving facilities. You recognise the importance of healthy working relationships and that an effective, collaborative and supportive team is a true asset. You can work through novel and challenging problems and continually grow your skills and knowledge.

Bristol was recently named by The Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in the UK.  Some of the highlights include Banksy’s Street art, the international balloon fiesta, floating harbour, Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Glastonbury festival.  Bristol is close to the glorious countryside of the South-West of England, including the Mendip Hills and Jurassic Coast.  The city is also well connected by rail and road—beautiful and historic Bath is only minutes away and Central London is less than 2 hours by train.  Bristol is a vibrant city with a strong economy based around creative, technology, aerospace and engineering industries.  It has plentiful shopping, parks, sport and leisure facilities together with many cafes, bars and music venues.  For those looking to move to Bristol we offer a relocation support to help you do so.
