Human Physiology at Supercomputing Scale: WHPC Supports the ISC26 Midweek Keynote
One of the standout moments of ISC26 arrives midweek with the keynote “HPC for Vascular Digital Twins” from Amanda Randles.
As modern healthcare moves toward earlier detection, continuous monitoring, and personalised intervention, entirely new computational challenges are emerging. Amanda Randles’ work explores how High-Performance Computing, GPU acceleration, and large-scale simulation are enabling the modelling of human physiology over time through patient-specific vascular digital twins.
Her keynote will examine the computational realities behind this vision, from simulating millions of cardiac cycles to integrating wearable sensor data, immersive visualisation technologies, and interactive analysis workflows suitable for clinical environments.
The session highlights how supercomputing is increasingly moving beyond traditional scientific domains into areas with direct human impact, helping transform how disease may one day be detected, monitored, and treated.
WHPC facilitator Andrea Townsend-Nicholson will help guide the session and audience engagement during the keynote at ISC26.
About Amanda Randles
Amanda Randles is the Alfred Winborne Mordecai and Victoria Stover Mordecai Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, where she also serves as Director of the Duke Center for Computational and Digital Health Innovation.
Her work focuses on patient-specific digital twin models that integrate HPC, machine learning, and multiscale biophysical simulation to support proactive diagnosis and treatment across diseases, including cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Her contributions have been recognised through awards including the ACM Prize in Computing, the NIH Pioneer Award, the NSF CAREER Award, the ACM Grace Hopper Award, and the Jack Dongarra Early Career Award.
